Factories
Exhibition Test
Factories is my representation of the community in Milwaukee. One piece of the tyvek is of the inside of a factory and the other tyvek is a baseball field with beer factories in the background as it represents our community is built around baseball as our baseball team is built on the manufacture of beer. The art pieces are all of my making without any purchases. My inspiration for this piece is paintings by John Constable, Wivenhoe Park, Essex and Pieter Claesz, Vanitas.

Inspiration
One inspiration for the piece was a still life by Pieter Claesz who used the medium oil painting. This piece was a panel that was completed in 1630. Not many paints was used during the creation of this piece as it only consisted of using brown, green, and blue as he limited his palette to create a realistic looking image. This image consists of multiple items that are sitting on table top. All of the items seem to be random, but all have their own meaning to the piece. I plan on using this piece to my one piece of the factory as I am going to use minimal colors in the creation similar to this still life. I also plan on using this piece in a similar way with the space and value of the piece. Not a lot of negative space and large difference in the value of the piece. My other inspiration is a piece done by John Constable called Wivenhoe Park, Essex. This was a landscaping painting that was created of land located 55 miles north of London. This was land owned by the Rebow family who were good friends to John Constable. This land wasn't painted exactly how it was seen as things were moved around in the painting. The house and the lake cannot be seen together in the actual land. The most active parts of the painting are the animals and the clouds. John focused mainly on the land and the sky as this was what he preferred to paint. The money that was made by this piece from John would help him get married as it paid for his wedding. He got married a month after he completed this piece. I plan on using this piece with the structure of the piece with the building and landscape. The use of color I will try to use in the production of my piece. |

Planning
When planning on creating this piece, I already had the idea to have baseball and the idea of what this community is built on. My first planning sketch was of the barrel with a body resembling the beer barrel man. This was a logo that has been seen since the 1940’s linked to the Milwaukee Brewers. This logo is still being used today as I wanted to use him to represent how long Baseball has been in our community and how it is a a part of community now. The second planning sketch was a sketch also to the beer barrel man. Both of these were planning sketches of stencils that are going to be used to silk screen. The other image is of the image of the actual finish pieces. The image is of a baseball field with the factories in the background as my final product is similar, but just has the baseball field rotated. |
This was to display that the factories was what our city was built off of and that baseball came from the factories. I did this have the main focus of the baseball field, but to not forget what our city was built off of. The other image is the view of inside a factory with a barrel in it to represent the manufacture of beer in our city. This also was to represent the beer barrel man and how it helped build our city with baseball.
Process
The first step I took in creating this piece was creating the backgrounds for it to be printed on the tyvek. This first background was created using digital manipulation I first went and took photos of miller factories and a picture of an open baseball field. I used photo shop to create the background as I used the magic wand to select parts of the images and cutting them out of the image. I fused the two images together as the factories are in the distance looking out past the baseball field. I cut the sky out of the baseball image and overlapped that image to the factories. Next I got rid of the sign in the factory image by using the eyedropper tool to find a color similar to the leaves around the sign. I then selected an area of leaves with the quick selection tool and copy the image of the leaves to cover the sign. I next got rid of the Miller sign in the background I used the eye dropper tool again and found the color of the sign. I then selected the sign using the polygonal lasso tool to paint inside of the selected area. The other background I used a chip board to paint on the background. I first added 3 layers of Gesso to the board. After it was done drying, I then drew on the outline of the conveyor belts and boxes. I then mixed my paints to find the right color of hues for the piece. I made a darker and lighter color of the brown and grey to try and create a light in the piece. After painting the board, when finished drying, I scanned the board to have a digital image of the board. I saved both of the these backgrounds to have a size of 36 x 36 and a resolution of 200. Then I printed them out on to the size 36 x 36 on a piece of Tyvek. After this I created my stencils to do the silk screening. I created a large barrel, baseball, and a baseball bat along with a smaller barrel in case the larger barrel was to large. I used an exact o knife to cut of the areas of the paper I want to be seen when silk screening. Then after cutting the stencil you tape them to the flat part of the silk screen. I then placed it (where I wanted the stencil to be) with the flat side on top of the tyvek. Then I placed the darker brown ink at the top above the stencil inside the silk screen. I then pulled the ink down the silk screen to cover the stencil. When doing this hold at 45 degrees and apply pressure to the silk screen. I then and removed the stencil and washed the silk screen with a shower hose until all ink was removed and the silk screen was clean. Then dry of the silkscreen using a hair dryer, but hold the hair dryer at least 6 inches from the silk screen. I repeated this when silk screening on the baseball and baseball. |

Experimentation
When first learning how to silk screen I used experimentation when silk screening my stencils on. I silk screen them on to paper first before silk screening them on tyvek. I applied different amounts of pressure to the silk screen to learn the difference of how the image would come out. I did this over and over until I got the right pressure to apply it onto the tyvek. I wasn't at first applying enough pressure to the silk screen. This would cause for the image to only come out in some spots and not the whole stencil. Another form of experimentation was mixing the paint to find the right colors to create the light in the background. I mixed multiple colors of brown from white and brown to find a lighter brown. I applied more white to find a a lighter brown to use for the top of the boxes. I also mixed black and white to find the color grey. I applied more white to get a lighter grey for the top of the conveyor belt. |

Reflection
Similarities Use of color Very little negative space Great difference in value Location of items in the piece Landscape moved around in a piece Similar in contrast of the pieces Differences Different shapes between organic and geometrical Different types of landscapes Different mediums used in creation of the pieces Different reasons for creation Different in unity as both pieces have a different unity |
ACT Responses
1.Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause and-effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
The effect of my inspiration in my artwork is very strong as Weavanhie Park, Essex and the still life impact the decision of what goes into my artwork. These two inspirations help me plan what my pieces are going to be as a finish product.
2.What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
John took an approach as a favor for friend and as a business transaction as it helped him pay for his marriage expenses. Pieter had a passion for the art work that he was creating.
3.What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
That John worked hard and fast to finish his piece to pay for his marriage and that he did this painting that plays into his strength and skills.
4.What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
Their wasn’t a central idea or theme around my inspirational research.
5.What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
That their is always meaning in art as every little has meaning from color in the piece to placement.
